I was listening to a podcast interview of Seth Godin by Tim Ferriss and they were talking about how to write well. Seth mentioned starting and regularly writing in a blog. He clearly meant writing a blog to say things about the world and how things will turn out, but I’m not ready to do that yet. It did make me want to write more often. Write more terrible stuff. So eventually I will write something good.

Paragraphs and Poems

Laying in my bed I was thinking about the first time I learned how to write a paragraph. Really the beginning of my learning to write anything that wasn’t just practice of how to write a letter or learn grammar.

A paragraph begins with a statement of it’s purpose. After that you write about supporting ideas, which I think of as premises, that make that statement a reality. Finally, the paragraph wraps up what it said in some sort of synthesis, and has to be three sentences long.

I really enjoyed sitting and thinking about the first time I learned about paragraphs. I have no idea where I was other than guessing by the school I went to etc. etc.. However, I can almost hear the voice of the woman explaining it to me. I wonder how many times people think about these sorts of things? Do published authors think back to when they learned the structure of a paragraph, or the first time they were required to think up their own 5-paragraph essay?

I think about whether there is anything more complex, in prose, other than the paragraph. Essays work in a similar structure. Research Papers have the same Thesis, Premises/Evidence, and Synthesis. Poems are entirely different. Fiction even does a similar activity with foreshadowing and other devices. I’ve written poetry. I’ve attempted to finish many research papers on-time. I kept excellent journals. Almost the only thing I’ve written in most categories, besides things you could actually make money from, and I often feel like you are always writing a Paragraph or a Poem.

I have been struggling with lack of direction. For at least the next month, and hopefully three months, I will be workng on a few goals. The goal this post is about is gaining muscular weight.

I have a fairly easy time gaining weight and have gained plenty in the past, but sadly each time I gained weight I would get sick shortly thereafter or I would have severe troubles with my depression. This time I want to add around 20lbs of lea weigh and keep it.

Yesterday I sat down and took my measurements and BF%. I used the personal use version of BodyMetrix.

Weight: 184lbs

BF%: 14.2

Lean Weight: 157.9lbs

Today I hit the gym.

I am using Time Ferriss’s Occam Protocol to gain the weight as I have had good success with it before, and also would like a mental break from developing a workout routine.

Finding my Starting weight, I began with the Supinated pulldown.

I took a 3minute rest here and went back at around 70% of 140

I did this with 5 seconds up and 5 seconds down on each rep and held at my point of failure for a full 10 seconds just shaking.

I found out my left arm is waaaaay weaker than my right arm, and that the new machines in the gym won’t let one arm compensate for the other. So this one might take a while to advance, or perhaps being fatigued first has alot to do with it. Either way it is nice to know the machines are encouraging muscle balancing. I held at failure for 10 seconds again.

10 reps of 10 second “cat vomit” or basic Nauli.

It was a good workout and I felt good afterwards. I ate around 4000 calories today too and am tempted to keep eating. So he muscle should start piling on!

Today I did Workout B of Tim Ferriss’ Occam Protocol.

7.2 reps with 100lbs of chest press

5minute rest

10.3 reps with 165lbs of leg presses.

75 kettlebell swings with a 20lb kettlebell

So, this is the stuff I am into at the moment:

1. At the advice of Ramose Daskalodos I am going to try and restart any habit that has fallen apart on the New Moon. Hopefully getting some umph from the timing, and reducing my down time from 1 month to 3 years down to 2 weeks.

2. Those habits are going to be a certain meditation, proper timing of my Longterm insulin, Cleaning my sink every night, using my Lumosity subscription each day, Studying for an hour each day, and balancing my “check book” each friday.

3. has caught my interest after Tim Ferriss linked to an article about the guy on Facebook. I like his ideas and have considered adopting a similar plan once I get more of a job going.

4. I’m going to get a Christmas job. Start interviews on Monday, hopefully the first one is a success and I can just prepare for that job.

5.  Listening to Caribou on repeat.

6.  I’m recalling 6 dreams a morning, soon to be lucid ones. Been closer every night.

So, I like taking my measurements on Saturdays. The day ruled by Saturn, the Judge, the objective measure.

Today I took my Inches, my Body Fat Percentage, and my Weight. I don’t have my blood pressure cuff right now, but I might include that in the future. For now I’ll just be putting my Total Inches, because I am not feeling confident enough to put the specific inches up here yet, haha.

Total Inches is the sum of my biceps, thighs, chest, hips, and waist.

Total Inches: 180.125

Change: (.125)

Body Fat Percentage: 15.7

Change: (.5)

Weight: 194lbs

Change: None

Not as huge a change as I sometimes have when I pick my fitness program back up, but still pretty awesome.

I started listening to the Audiobook this morning. I realized halfway through making my protein shake that I was doing my daily ritual. I take some herbs to help manage my diabetes, drink some goji berry juice, make a protein shake, and drink a few cups of hot water.

I like the book so far, but I have difficulty remembering the name of each person. That frustrates me. Maybe It will get better, or I will have to re-listen to the book a few times. This is definitely the kind of book that I will need to take notes on.

I like Timothy Ferriss. I like the way he talks, the things he talks about, even the stranger pieces of his humor. It all clicks with me. So, now that I have made it clear than I am huge fan boy of his, I’d like to start blogging about how his ideas and actions have an influence on my life.

Really. That is what this blog has been about anyways. I do Convict Conditioning workouts because they are compact, efficient, and I can do them ANYWHERE. Which are all ideals I got from reading Tim’s ideas on how to try and live your life.

Recently I bought the two audiobooks that Tim has posted about as part of his new book club. I listened to Vagabonding by Rolf Potts last month, and have read it once before. My main thought about that book was: Can a diabetic do this? The answer is Yes. It will simply take more precise planning at times, and there are some experiences that will simply be too risky for me. But the answer is Yes, and someday I will vagabond. The next book, which I just downloaded, is Daily Rituals by Mason Currey. I know nothing about this book besides what Tim has written about it on his blog. Soon, you will hear my thoughts on it. (Link: )

So there is a Sports Apprenticeship program at my college, and I haven’t really done much with my Personal Trainer Certification at NCSF. So I am in it and today I met my first client at the gym!!!

We got along pretty well, it was mostly to figure out times to meet up during the week and then get some basic stats for health. Got BF% Weight, and inches. I forgot to take my heart-rate moniter, but I will just bring the cuff when we meet up this week, that way I have some starting stat on that.

Being an avid fan of Timothy Ferriss, I wish I could do ALL the testing haha. But I guess I will wait until I am through this apprenticeship before I start suggesting those sorts of big commitments.
